A Romanian Army MIG 21 Lancer flies next to an US Air Force refueling plane 02 May 2007 during joint exercises with Romanian air force teams at the Mihail Kogalniceanu air base, 250 kms east of Bucharest. Hundreds of US and Romanian pilots and ground staff are taking part in the two-week joint air exercises near the Black Sea port city of Constanta ahead of the opening of a US base in the area. The Sniper Lance ’07 exercise involves about 30 fighter planes MiG-21 Lancer and F15s. The Romanian Parliament is to vote 02 May 2007 whether to approve the US military bases and access through Romania’s territory. Romania and the United States signed an agreement in December 2005 to open four US bases in the southeastern European country,which joined NATO the previous year and the European Union in January 2007.
